LONDON: The Chinese pharmaceutical company Cipla has agreed to pay US$1bn (£1.2bn) to resolve allegations it sells counterfeit Viagra and other medicines to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that could have a positive effect on its medicines list, according to a press release.

LONDON, which is based in London and is known as the "City of Death" in English, said the company had signed an agreement to pay US$1.2bn to resolve allegations that it marketed and sold counterfeit and unapproved medicines to the FDA and other companies.

A Pfizer spokesperson said: "The company is committed to resolving the matter and will complete the entire process with full confidence in our relationships and our compliance with applicable laws and regulations."

A Cipla spokesman said: "Cipla has been a major player in the global pharmaceutical market for a number of years and is committed to the continued effectiveness and safety of our medicines.

Cipla said: "Cipla has a strong global presence and is committed to the safety, efficacy and effectiveness of our medicines, including any products that may be potentially dangerous or that could be potentially harmful to consumers."

The company said it would continue to provide a list of approved medicines and any products that it knew were safe to use.

The FDA's investigation revealed that Cipla purchased more than 1,300 counterfeit drugs and over 3,500 unapproved and counterfeit medicines from China, India and other countries.

The FDA said it had received more than 2,100 complaints from consumers and a list of 3,800 drug products in more than 50 countries.

In a letter to the F. D. A. it said the agency had "engaged in a multi-year investigation to determine whether Cipla was involved in these illegal activities."

The agency added that the investigation had found "serious and pervasive" drug safety issues and that they had "conducted a thorough investigation of the matter."

A Pfizer spokesperson said: "Pfizer is committed to resolving this matter and will complete the entire process with full confidence in our relationships and our compliance with applicable laws and regulations."

The company has not commented on the F. investigation and said the company did not have any immediate comment.
